Course Description

The aim of the course is to show you how to use R to make pretty, yet appealing maps using the R programming language. Several R packages related to spatial data processing and visualization will be introduced during the course. The course will teach you how create publication-ready static maps, animated maps, interactive maps, and simple map applications using a mixture of lectures and computer exercises.

What You’ll Learn

During the course we will cover the following:

  • Be able to create a variety types of static maps, including raster maps, choropleth maps, and point maps.
  • Know how to create interactive maps and simple map applications using the shiny package.
  • Be able to create facet maps and map animations to represent spatiotemporal phenomenon.
  • Know how to utilize specific-purpose mapping packages to create cartograms or grid maps.
  • Have the confidence to apply map making skills to their own projects.

Who Should Attend / Intended Audiences

This course is designed for academics and postgraduate students working on projects involving spatial data who wish to create publication-ready maps, interactive maps for websites, or simple mapping web applications. While prior knowledge of GIS concepts such as spatial vectors, rasters, and coordinate reference systems is helpful but not essential, attendees should ideally have experience with R, including reading CSV files, creating simple plots, and manipulating data frames. However, the course may also be suitable for those without R experience if they already use GIS software, have a strong understanding of geographic data types, and possess some programming experience.

 

Equipment and Software requirements

A laptop or desktop computer with a functioning installation of R and RStudio is required. Both R and RStudio are free, open-source programs compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux systems.

While not essential, using a large monitor—or ideally a dual-monitor setup—can significantly enhance your learning experience by allowing you to view course materials and work in R simultaneously.

All necessary R packages will be introduced and installed during the workshop.

Jakub Nowosad

Jakub is a computational geographer whose work lies at the intersection of geocomputation, environmental science, and spatial data analysis. His research focuses on developing and applying spatial methods to improve understanding of environmental processes and patterns. A vital part of his work is creating, collaborating on, and improving geocomputational software, with a strong emphasis on reproducibility and accessibility.

He is an active member of the #rspatial community and co-author of the widely used books Geocomputation with R and Geocomputation with Python, which have become key resources for researchers and practitioners in spatial analysis. His contributions span methodological development, software implementation, and applied research in environmental and ecological sciences.
